Tuesday 27th October : Training by Bal Howard

"On Tuesday we had the pleasure of a full day's training with the amazing Bal Howard. She took us through honour-based abuse, forced marriage, FGM (female genital mutilation) and modern slavery in such an informed and sensitive manner, using lots of case studies to highlight the ‘human’ within these forms of abuse. Bal was an amazing facilitator and we’re looking forward to embedding knowledge within our practice. It was particularly interesting for the young people's workers within our Rose Project to discuss the NRM (National Referral Mechanism) and its uses within the exploitation context." Abbie Haines, Specialist Women's Outreach Worker

Trustees’ Week

Trustees’ Week is an annual event - with NCVO one of the organising partners of the campaign - showcasing the great work of the 700,000 volunteer trustees who run charities in England and Wales. Trustees are volunteers who take on ultimate legal, strategic and oversight responsibility for an organisation’s work. They play a vital leadership role in any charity. Trustees’ Week 2020 will take place 2–6 November. It's an opportunity to highlight the excellent work of trustees, support boards to improve their governance, and encourage new people to consider trusteeship and volunteering opportunities. We support Trustees' Week, & would like to pass on our sincerest thanks to our lovely trustees - Georgie, Nick, Caroline, Janice, Rowland & Lucy - for all they do to support us at The Magdalene Group. Thank you is never enough.

Youth Strike 4 Climate

Youth Strike 4 Climate

A few weeks ago, the Head of Quality and Compliance (maternity cover) met with Florence from Youth Strike 4 Climate, Norwich to speak about our Environmental Sustainability Policy and to ensure as an organisation we are doing enough to limit our impact on the climate. As a women’s and young people's service we recognise that climate change is a gendered-issue meaning it impacts women and girls disproportionately, as women commonly face higher risks and greater burdens from the impacts of climate change in situations of poverty, and the majority of the world’s poor are women. Many young people are also now reporting mental health issues related to climate anxiety. During our meeting Florence made some excellent suggestions including considering the use of Ecosia (https://www.ecosia.org/?c=en) an eco-friendly search engine that plants trees with its profits. Every time you make a search a tree gets planted! We also spent time discussing the impact climate anxiety is having for young people and how as an organisation we can be sensitive and supportive when dealing with young people and adults who experience this type of anxiety. It was also helpful to have Florence remind us that although we have a responsibility to try and be as eco-friendly as possible as an organisation, 71% of global emissions come from 100 companies and we need to keep this in perspective.
