Supporting International Sex Workers’ Rights Day………ahead of tomorrow………

In 2001, over 25,000 sex workers gathered in India for a festival, despite efforts from prohibitionist groups, who tried to prevent it taking place by pressuring the government to revoke their permit. The event was organised by Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, a Calcutta-based group, that has over 50,000 sex worker members, and members of their communities. Sex worker groups across the world have subsequently celebrated 3rd March as International Sex Workers’ Rights Day.

Becoming Trauma Informed Awareness Training

Day one of two, led by our trainer Kirsty, on behalf of One Small Thing. Some truly alarming statistics - thought-provoking to say the least - alongside helpful definitions; discussions around threats, triggers & toxic stress; plus welcome opportunity to discuss & debate. Here's what some of my colleagues thought.........

Women’s Aid : ‘Too into You’

Women’s Aid : ‘Too into You’

"For Valentine’s Day, Women’s Aid launched an interesting campaign called ‘Too into You,’ targeting young women aged 18-25 experiencing intimate partner violence. They released a fact sheet based on their research, which found that 1 in 6 young women experienced coercive control and 3 in 4 were sexually coerced by their ex or current male partner. The research also found that young women were less likely to access support, with 50% not aware of specialist support such as ours. " Lydia Davies, Women's Specialist Practitioner.

Up to 1 in 50 adults in the UK pose a sexual threat to children… what are you doing about it?…

"In a time when the pressures on young people around sexuality, healthy relationships and personal safety seem to be forever changing and increasing, it is important that The Magdalene Group's offering of support and education is both adaptable and flexible. The Trustees received an update at their last meeting on the work of the Jigsaw strand of the charity's operation. This dynamic and thought provoking programme delivers interactive sessions to schools and trainer sessions to teachers aimed at providing a better understanding of consent, sexual harassment, impacts of social media and combating the messaging, often violent and abusive, from internet pornography. As with our other streams of work, The Magdalene Group is fortunate to have dedicated and enthusiastic staff to take this agenda forward." Lucy Macleod, Trustee

"As Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week draws to a close, I thought I would summarise the topics the Doorway team have touched upon on our Twitter. These include: • The need to acknowledge Adult Sexual Exploitation in policy and legislation • Increased police-recorded sexual offences in 2021 • Increased risk of sexual violence among multiple disadvantage women, including minority populations • 'Deserving/Undeserving victims and victim-blaming of sex workers • Reasons why sex workers do not report to the police. If you would like to read more, check out our Twitter." Lydia Davies, Women's Specialist Practitioner
